Wow, this is a good-looking SUV - and so much nicer than the original version. The second generation Kia Sorento is turning heads all over town, and is solid testimony to research in the US and Europe that's shown the Sorento is easily on an equal footing to some of the world's top premium brands.

Super-style me

I swanned around in the 2.2 CRDi for a week, and seven days was way too short. I loved the comfort, the styling, the (optional) almost full-length sunroof, the clean and refined lines, and the nice and gutsy engine which, despite being diesel-powered, was remarkably quiet.

Apparently, Kia Motors has invested more time and resources into the Sorento vehicle than any other car in its history. And it shows.

Five-star

And that grille! The big butch air intakes and the sexy wraparound headlights... whichever model you choose, you have all the active and passive safety features you'd expect as well as dual front, side and full-length curtain airbags, Hill-Start Assist Control and Roll Over Protection technology. No surprise, then, that the new Kia Sorento clocked up a solid five stars on the Euro NCAP safety-rating card.

You'll also find the beefy turbocharged engine as impressive on the road as it is on the dirty stuff. The interior, by the way, is a pleasure, with an illuminated 3-D instrument cluster, great leather seats and steering wheel, and loads of stowage places.

Colourful Kia Sorento

The test car I had was the AWD seven-seater version and it was bliss. I also loved that nifty little reverse camera screen on the left side of the rear view mirror, which comes in handy. There are some great colour options, too, like Java Brown, Blue Jeans, Spicy Red and Ebony Black, among them.

The new Kia Sorento range comprises seven models with a choice of two engines, five or seven seats and a six-speed manual or auto gearbox - I had the auto version, and it was smooth and beautiful.

What I also really like about Sorento is that it offers affordable, well specced value for money cars that don't skimp on technology or sound engineering - and they keep consumers happy.

Kia Motors is South Korea's oldest car manufacturer and today the second largest automobile manufacturer in Asia, as well as being a major international manufacturer of motor vehicles around the world. No mean feat, particularly for a company that started life way back in 1944 making steel tubing and bicycle parts!

Price

R399 995 for the 2.2 CRDI seven-seater but add on extra if you want metallic paint and other optional extras.
